## Schema change and SQL review

**Only Bytebase has this.** StrongDM brokers access and logs sessions; it does not inspect the SQL before it runs or manage the schema change itself.

If a team uses StrongDM alone, schema changes usually go through a parallel tool (Liquibase, Flyway, Bytebase, homegrown scripts) while StrongDM handles the human session access. Bytebase is where the schema change + approval + SQL review all live in one workflow.

## Access and approval

- **StrongDM** controls access through role assignments and access rules. Rules can be static (explicit grants) or dynamic (tag-based automation that grants access to resources matching criteria). Approval is configured per access rule: named approvers sign off on JIT requests. - **StrongDM**: no dynamic masking. Role-based access can restrict who sees which resource, but the data itself is not transformed. An engineer with approved access to a production database sees the full column values.
- **Bytebase**: dynamic data masking with semantic types (email, phone, credit card). Admins tag columns; Bytebase applies the masking algorithm in SQL Editor and export flows. Exemptions go through approval and are logged in the same audit trail.

For teams that handle regulated data (PCI, HIPAA, GDPR) and need query-time masking, this is a Bytebase-only capability. StrongDM typically pairs with a separate masking tool for this requirement.

## SQL editor

- **StrongDM**: no built-in SQL editor. Engineers connect through StrongDM with their own tool (DBeaver, DataGrip, psql, mysql CLI). StrongDM brokers the connection; the SQL interface is whatever the engineer brought.
- **Bytebase**: built-in browser SQL editor with schema browser, saved sheets, history, and inline masking. Engineers who only need query access can work entirely in the browser.

Partially. For JIT database access, yes — both products cover that need. For the full StrongDM scope (PAM across databases, servers, Kubernetes, cloud), Bytebase is not an alternative. Bytebase is database-only. Teams that need PAM for non-database infrastructure keep StrongDM.

**Does StrongDM review SQL?**
No. StrongDM brokers database connections and logs the sessions; it does not inspect SQL statements against rules before they run, and it does not manage schema changes. **What's the difference between PAM and database DevSecOps?**
PAM (privileged access management) covers access to infrastructure: who can connect to which database, server, or Kubernetes cluster, for how long, with what approval. Database DevSecOps covers the database workflow specifically: schema changes, SQL review, approval flows for DML/DDL, data masking, and per-environment policy. PAM answers "who can get to the database." Database DevSecOps answers "what can they do once they're there."

**Can StrongDM and Bytebase run together?**
Yes. A common pattern: StrongDM brokers the connection and manages the session audit trail across all infrastructure; Bytebase handles the database-specific workflow (change issues, SQL review, masking) on top of the access StrongDM provides. The products do not conflict.

**What's the best JIT database access tool?**
Depends on scope. If you need JIT across databases and other infrastructure, StrongDM is the standard choice. If you need JIT as part of a database-specific workflow that also includes change management and SQL review, Bytebase is the integrated option. Teams that need both scopes run both.

## GitHub - Code Hosting and CI/CD

**Pros:**

- User familiarity (who doesn't ~know~use [GitHub](https://github.com/)?).
- Integrated and powerful CI/CD capabilities with GitHub Actions.
- Integrated security like CodeQL, Dependabot and a wide range of 3rd party tools.
- AI advancement with Copilot.
- Good documentation and developer experience.

**Cons:**

- No free tier for private repositories and self-hosted option.

**Comments:**

GitLab was once the go-to choice for many platform teams, but we've observed a growing shift towards GitHub in recent years. We covered the comparison in a more [detailed post](/blog/github-vs-gitlab/).

Unless you're working with a limited budget and need the self-hosted option upfront, we recommend GitHub over GitLab.
That said, starting with GitLab and migrating to GitHub is still a viable path. Just keep in mind the potential challenges of becoming too reliant on GitLab CI and its API (an LLM can certainly assist the migration).

## Datadog - Observability

**Pros:**

Other than the Cons below.

**Cons:**

- Expensive.
- No self-hosted option.

**Comments:**

Many people have a love-hate relationship with [Datadog](https://www.datadoghq.com/). It's an all-in-one observability platform, but it can also be very expensive due to its per-host pricing model. But we think it's a good investment for the right team. For small-to-medium teams, infrastructure costs are typically manageable, with product-market fit being the key focus. For larger teams, there’s often more flexibility to explore alternatives or negotiate better pricing with Datadog.

## Terraform - Resource Provisioning

**Pros:**

- Best practice. IaC, state-based, declarative approach.
- Great ecosystem with many terraform providers.

**Cons:**

- Learning curve.
- HCL (Hashicorp Configuration Language) as the Terraform DSL is more limited than a general purpose programming language.

**Comments:**

[Terraform](https://www.terraform.io/) is usually the first tool that comes to mind when people think of platform engineering. While it has faced competition from newer tools like [Pulumi](https://www.pulumi.com/) in recent years, Terraform or its community fork [OpenTofu](https://opentofu.org/) remains a reliable choice, particularly due to its extensive provider ecosystem. You're more likely to find a Terraform provider for your infrastructure than for most other alternatives.

## Vault - Secret Management

**Pros:**

- Best practice for secret management. Dynamic secrets, access control, audit logs.
- Good ecosystem (Terraform and other vendor integrations).
- Open-source.

**Cons:**

- Learning Curve.
- Operational overhead.
- Single point of failure (SPOF).

**Comments:**

I first learned about [Vault](https://www.vaultproject.io/) at PGConf Silicon Valley 2016, and I was immediately hooked. When it comes to security, you definitely don’t want to reinvent the wheel by building your own secret management system—Vault is a game-changer. The key question is when to onboard it. Our recommendation is to start with Vault from day one as you establish your platform team. Begin with its KV engine, and as you scale, you can move to more advanced database engine alike. The goal is to establish best practices early on, setting a solid foundation for security. Get the team used to a centralized secret management system as opposed to having it spread across multiple tools.

When picking the essential tools for platform engineering, we focus on the following criteria:

- **Quality over cost**. Represent the best practices in the industry. Opting for the highest-quality tools ultimately proves to be more cost-effective in the long run.
- **Comprehensiveness**. A single tool can cover multiple aspects of platform engineering.
- **Strong ecosystem**. A robust ecosystem ensures that tools can integrate seamlessly with others. It's also easier to find help and resources when you have a strong ecosystem.
